Dal Tadka

Yellow lentils cooked with onions, tomatoes, and tempered with ghee, cumin seeds, garlic, and red chilies.

Ingredients

Provided

  • yellow split lentils (toor dal)
  • onion chopped
  • tomato chopped
  • ghee
  • cumin seeds
  • garlic minced
  • dried red chilies
  • turmeric
  • fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. 1Boil lentils in water with turmeric and salt until completely soft.
  2. 2Sauté chopped onions, garlic, and tomatoes in a pan until soft.
  3. 3Pour cooked lentils into the onion-tomato mixture and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. 4Prepare tempering (tadka): heat ghee in a small pan, add cumin seeds, minced garlic, and dried red chilies until browned and aromatic.
  5. 5Pour the hot tempering directly onto the simmering lentils. Garnish with fresh cilantro.
